The KY General Assembly continues to meet, even though they are threatening the health of their members and staff. The Republican leadership continues to insist that they can hold committee meetings and advance legislation, even though health experts have recommended that no groups larger than 10 meet.
And what is keeping them in Frankfort? What is so important that they have to be there?
If you said “passing a budget,” you would be WRONG, friend. They may get around to doing that by, oh, sometime next week. But in the meantime, they have really IMPORTANT work to do – like passing their ANTI-SANCTUARY bill! The bill that addresses a non-existent problem in our state, and yet is the Numero Uno priority for Senate Republicans. Not the opioid crisis, not education, not health care; nope, none of those issues are as important as making sure we do something about those brown people.
And now you can see how important it really is. The Republican leadership will risk making their members sick, they will take advantage of the fact that people opposed to the bill can’t get in to lobby or make their presence known, and they will pass the bill targeting those brown people, JUST so they can say they “did something about those illegals” when election time comes this fall.
Let us hope – no, let us PRAY – that no members of the General Assembly, or their staffs, get sick because of this reckless act.
Even better, let us hope, and pray, and INSIST, that our representatives do these four things, and ONLY these four things, THIS WEEK:
- Pass a budget that is equitable.
- Pass legislation supporting our health care workers and systems.
- Pass legislation supporting people who are suddenly unemployed
- Go home.
That’s it. That’s all that should be on the table. Stop spending time on scoring political points, get those three legislative things done, and get out of there.
