The GoVoteKY.com online portal has been in place for a few years, but on Friday it added a new option to its menu: Absentee Ballot Request. And according to our Secretary of State, over 100,000 Kentuckians have already taken advantage of that new feature.
(Remember, the deadline to request an absentee ballot is June 15!)
From the press release out of SOS Michael Adams’s office:
“Voting absentee is easy, secure, and wildly popular,” Adams said. “I’m grateful to the Kentuckians who understand that we have fewer voting locations available and fewer poll workers available because of COVID-19 – not only are these Kentuckians being good citizens by voting, but by voting absentee they’re being good citizens in relieving the pressure on our voting locations and our poll workers.”
In answer to those who are worried about the security of voting this way, Adams notes:
- The portal requires a voter to verify identity with date of birth and social security number
- The ballot envelopes will have bar codes for tracking
- And, local election officials will verify that the voter signature on the absentee ballot envelope matches the voter’s signature of record.
You don’t HAVE to use the online portal; you can get your absentee ballot directly from your county clerk via in-person visit, by phone, by fax, or by email.
