As retired Marine Lt. Col. Amy McGrath gears up for the final stretch of the race to unseat Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, her campaign announced today that it is bringing on Dan Kanninen as campaign manager to oversee the day-to-day operations.

An independent poll released this month by Quinnipiac University showed that McConnell is in a neck-and-neck race with McGrath. The 36-year Washington insider only holds a slight lead over McGrath, 49%-44%, with a 3.3% margin of error and 5% undecided. McGrath leads with independents 46%-40%.

Kanninen, who is the CEO of and a partner at STG, a political and public affairs firm, joined the team this month. He is a veteran of several major national campaigns in heated races in some of the toughest swing states. In 2020, he built and oversaw presidential candidate Mike Bloomberg’s operation of nearly 3,000 staff across more than 40 states, serving as his national states director in a role that merged organizing, analytics, digital, political, communications and electoral strategy.

“There is no more destructive force in Washington than Mitch McConnell—he is the architect of the dysfunction that is hurting Kentuckians,” Kanninen said. “After 36 years, he’s only enriched himself, while Kentucky’s economy has been wrecked, and now has failed to act in the face of a pandemic. Amy has served her country for more than 20 years, and she will continue to fight for Kentucky as senator. I’m honored to be a part of that fight.”

Mark Nickolas will oversee the paid media efforts as a senior advisor to the campaign.
