Alexandra Owensby, who has a doctorate as a nurse-practitioner and is running against Thomas Massie for U.S. Congress, issued this statement about the coronavirus coming to Kentucky:
- “First and foremost, don’t panic. Most people will have mild symptoms.
- Wash your hands frequently.
- If you are able to stock up on some supplies, in case you need to stay home for a period of time, please consider doing so.
- If you are a boss, start thinking of ways your employees could work from home if needed.
- If you are a parent, start thinking of what you will do if your child’s school closes temporarily.
- Please, do not purchase respiratory masks for personal use. We don’t have enough for non-medical people on top of nurses and doctors. Most respiratory masks are good for one use only and your chances of needing protection are much less than those on the front lines at the hospital. If the nurses and doctors are not protected there will be no one available to take care of you/your loved ones.
The outbreak is more widespread than current confirmed cases, as there are not enough tests available to confirm all cases. However, Kentucky will pull through the COVID-19 outbreak.
One thing that makes Kentucky strong is the sense of community we have and the way we look out for each other. There is no doubt in my mind, this sense of community will continue as we stand together and face this outbreak. Together, we are stronger than any disease.”
The statement also notes that it is her own and “does not reflect the views of her current or past employers.” It mentions that she opposes Thomas Massie’s votes in 2013 and 2018 that opposed funding for dealing with situations such as COVID-19. The statement closes with “Dr. Owensby looks forward to representing District 4 as a health care provider and ensuring future pandemics are addressed prior to becoming widespread.”
