Josh Hicks, Democrat for Congress in KY-6, announced a commanding third quarter fundraising haul, bringing in over $1,050,000 in the final months leading up to the general election. The period spans a three-month period from July 1 to September 30. Hicks has amassed a sizable campaign war chest while refusing to accept any money from corporate PACs.
Hicks’s campaign has captured the attention of Kentucky’s only Democratic Congressman, John Yarmuth. “That’s an eye-popping number,” said Yarmuth. “He’s got a lot of momentum. People need to keep an eye on this race.”
Hicks issued the following statement:
“I am running for Congress to fight for ordinary folks. You can’t fight for ordinary folks if you’re bought and paid for by corporations like Andy Barr is.
“These giant corporations spend millions of dollars buying our politicians. The Wall Street banks, the big drug companies, the big corporations are writing the rules. They are the ones getting the big tax cuts. And they are the ones moving jobs overseas with these awful trade deals. The system is rigged against ordinary folks. It’s just wrong and it’s got to stop.”
When Hicks launched his campaign, he pledged that he would not accept any money from corporate PACS. “We don’t have enough members of Congress who understand what it feels like to grow up poor,” Hicks said in his opening campaign ad last year.
The issue has been a point of contention in the election. Hicks recently launched a campaign commercial, “Don’t Come in Here,” criticizing Barr for being beholden to corporate interests.
Hicks’s opponent, Andy Barr, has taken in nearly $2.7 million in corporate PAC contributions during his political career, according to Maplight.org.
