The Kentucky Democratic Party has postponed their every-four-years party reorganization, due to concerns about the coronavirus pandemic.
In presidential election years, the KDP goes through a process of electing new leaders, from the local precinct all the way to the State Central Executive Committee. The process is somewhat convoluted, but essentially it begins with in-person meetings to hold elections at the precinct level, followed by in-person elections at the county or KY House legislative district (LD) level. The persons elected at those second meetings then hold other meetings and elections to elect people to serve on the SCEC and to be delegates to the national Democratic convention.
After consultation with both the governor’s office and with various party leaders, the KDP has decided to postpone the precinct meetings and elections, which had been scheduled for March 21, and the county/LD meetings and elections, scheduled for April 18. At this point, there is no word on when they will be held.
KDP leadership has also told local leaders to consider either postponing meetings, or to hold them virtually via teleconference or video-conference.
