The small but growing Indivisible SE KY did some activism work by visiting the office of Congressman Hal Rogers (R-KY05). The group was led by Virginia Meagher, the leader of Indivisible SE KY, and included Patricia Murphy and Bess Douthitt.
They were able to speak with Andrea Begley and Nan Estep in the office in Hazard. The group expressed their opposition to funding for more immigrant detention centers, and especially giving that funding to CoreCivic, a for-profit company looking to make more money off detaining more immigrants.
Virginia Meagher noted, “When I represented prisoners who were in the Lee Detention Center in Lee County, KY, which is owned and operated by the same corporation, the prisoners all told me they did not get enough food; they were hungry. But the stockholders were getting dividends.”
