Indivisible KY today announced their endorsement of Mike Broihier for the Democratic nomination in the U.S. Senate race.
Broihier, a farmer, educator, retired Marine, and former Kentucky newspaper editor, is one of three major candidates for the nomination. The others are Amy McGrath, also a retired Marine, and Charles Booker, a state representative from Louisville.
The announcement came in a press conference featuring Broihier, his campaign staff, and the co-chairs of Indivisible KY, Chris Rowzee and Sharon Fleck. Said Fleck, “Our board chose to endorse Mike Broihier because we feel very strongly that he can beat Mitch McConnell by energizing Kentuckians who are looking for someone to represent the people of Kentucky. Mike’s policies reflect the values and interests of Indivisible Kentucky as well as, we believe, those of the majority of Kentuckians.”
In their statement, the Indivisible KY leaders noted that they thought all three major candidates would make much better senators than McConnell, and that “each one of them has the integrity and leadership to move Kentucky forward while protecting and restoring our democratic norms.”
They go on to note, though, that in these “perilous times,” we need “strong leaders who are laser focused on what’s best for the people, not for themselves.” After looking at the three candidates, the Indivisible KY board felt “we need a candidate who can take him on, stand toe-to-toe with him. We’ve evaluated the candidates and we believe the best candidate to beat McConnell and represent the PEOPLE of Kentucky is Mike Broihier. That’s why Indivisible Kentucky is proud to endorse Mike Broihier for Senate.”
This is the fourth Indivisible chapter in Kentucky to endorse Broihier, following similar endorsements from Indivisible Northern Kentucky, Indivisible Pennyroyal, and Indivisible Southeast Kentucky.
The Broihier campaign noted that after the Indivisible Northern Kentucky candidate debate in early March, the national Indivisible organization conducted a poll of persons who watched the debate. In that poll, 88% of the persons polled said they would vote for Broihier if the election were held that night.
Challenges McGrath to debate
At the end of the press conference, Broihier challenged Amy McGrath to a debate, noting that “it has become clear to me that Kentucky Democrats deserve a conversation about who would be the best candidate to face Mitch McConnell this November. That is why I am issuing a challenge to Amy McGrath. Let’s have a debate so that voters can be informed when they cast their ballots in the June primary.” Neither he nor his campaign mentioned Rep. Booker in their debate challenge.
McGrath is the choice of national Democrats, including the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, and has amassed an enormous financial war chest, including out-raising her possible November opponent, Senator Mitch McConnell. However, the Broihier campaign is positioning him as more electable and more able to beat McConnell in the fall. The Indivisible leaders agree.
