The House impeachment committee met today to consider the impeachment petition against Governor Andy Beshear, and adjourned without a final disposition of the petition.
They also planned to begin work on the impeachment petition against Rep. Robert Goforth, but “ran out of time.”
The committee met at 3 PM, and almost immediately went into executive session. Two and a half hours later they returned from executive session, shared some information, and adjourned after taking a few questions. They did not indicate when they would meet again.
A withdrawal letter, a response to a response, and a request for another response
One of the four petitioners seeking to turn Beshear out of office had his lawyer send a letter to the committee, asking to withdraw from the action. Robert Sexton, the lawyer for Randall Daniel, said that he explained to Daniel that “impeachment is not a proper response when public officials make policy decisions with which a citizen disagrees.” Wheeler agreed, and thus asked to withdraw. The impeachment committee said they would grant his request. The other three petitioners intend to move forward with their impeachment motion.
In fact, those three petitioners have filed their response to Governor Beshear’s response to their original petition. Their 272-page response begins “The Governor’s puerile and juvenile attacks on these petitioners demonstrate further unfitness for office, in addition to a disgusting and wasteful use of public funds (and possibly yet another violation of the U.S. Constitution).” The entire document is attached at the end of this article.
Finally, as the committee was concluding, the chair, Rep. Jason Nemes, said they were going to ask Governor Beshear for “a little more information,” and wanted him to respond by Monday. They plan to draft the letter to him on Thursday, and have it posted on line once it is drafted and sent.
