One of the main differences between protests of the past and protests today is living right now in your pocket. That’s right – your smart phone. With cameras inside almost everyone’s phone, photos and video can be taken anywhere, any time. And while much of what gets captured is done by everyday citizens in the moment, some of the people doing the capturing and the live-streaming have taken it up a notch: they have become citizen journalists.
Lately, it appears that some police officers are intentionally targeting these video streamers, even though such streaming is protected under Supreme Court decisions.
In response, a rally was held in Louisville on Friday, July 10. It was called the “Heads Up, Phones Out!” rally, and it featured a number of live streamers speaking about their work.
Our Del Ramey (another citizen journalist) was at the rally, and captured these photos.
