I continue to be amazed at the people, primarily conservatives, who just ignore the random nature of the COVID-19 virus, and want all of us to join them in playing COVID Roulette.

They want to “reopen the economy” as fast as possible. They want everyone to go back to work, post-haste. They say “the cure is worse than the disease” and “we’ve over-reacted and it’s time to get back to normal.”

And, they believe that the virus is contained, or can be contained, and that their city/county/state is immune, and therefore they don’t need to be careful.

In fact, I actually heard one person say that we should put our resources into prisons and nursing homes, and let the rest of Kentucky go back to the way it was. Really.

We all know the basics: many people have only mild symptoms, it primarily affects elderly people, and so on. But what these COVID Roulette promoters don’t acknowledge are three very important facts:

  • You don’t know who has the virus, including any of the persons you come in contact with, because they can have it and pass it on to you without showing symptoms.
  • You don’t know if YOU have it – at least until YOU’RE the one who gets sick.
  • And, you don’t know what COVID-19 will do to you if you get it – until you find out.

Listen to the ages of the hospitalizations and deaths reported every day. Listen to people who have had it and recovered. They’re not all elderly, and they’re not all in prison.

Are the odds in your favor, especially if you’re under 65? Sure. The odds are also in your favor in Russian Roulette.

But I guarantee that if you met one of these people urging us to forget about masks, or saying it’s all made up, or urging us to rush to reopen our economy, no matter what —

And handed them a gun loaded with one bullet, and challenged them to take a chance and see if their odds held up —

They would hand the gun back to you and say “Are you crazy?!?”

So answer me this, COVID Roulette promoters:  Why should I let you put the gun to MY head, or to my family’s head, or to my community’s head?

You can play games with people’s lives somewhere else. We’re going to deal with COVID-19 as the serious threat that it is, and not some game.

It doesn’t matter if five chambers are empty. We’re going to do all we can to prevent that sixth one from going off.
