The Daily Yonder has been tracking the spread of the coronavirus in rural (non-metro) counties for months. Each week they put out an updated map of the rates of infection per 100,000 population. Here is this week’s map.
The dark red counties are rural counties in the red zone; the light red counties are non-rural counties in the red zone.

- Rural infections broke their weekly record for the fourth week in a row.
- The total number of persons living in rural counties that have tested positive has passed 1 million.
- Nearly 70% of the nation’s rural counties are in the red zone, according to the White House’s metrics.
- A higher percentage of rural counties are in the red zone (69%) than metro counties in the red zone (54%).
- A higher percentage of Kentucky’s rural counties (78%) are in the red zone than the national rate.
