The House committee hearing the impeachment petition against Governor Beshear meets this afternoon (Wednesday, January 27) at 3 PM. Both sides have filed briefs in the case, with the governor’s brief saying the petition is based on “no facts and little law.” The petitioners’ brief says the governor has put them in harm’s way by attacking them personally, and that he has overstepped his authority in dealing with the pandemic. (WHAS has obtained both filings.)
The committee could decide to throw out the impeachment petition, or to hold hearings, or to advance it to the floor of the House.
Also, the committee is expected to lay out a timeline for dealing with the separate impeachment petition filed against Rep. Robert Goforth. What the committee will not be doing is dealing with the impeachment petition against Attorney General Daniel Cameron. Even though that petition was filed some days ago, House rules say it must be sent to the impeachment committee by another House committee, which can’t happen until the House meets again next week.
And finally, the petition to have Nemes removed as chair has been filed, but hasn’t been dealt with by any committee, as far as we know. It is still waiting disposition.
