There is a mediocre congresswoman you have never heard of because she is from Michigan and because she doesn’t deserve the slightest attention. I will not mention her name because she doesn’t deserve any publicity; if you really must know her name, you can read Esquire’s redoubtable Charlie Pierce ream her out a new one here. As far as I’m concerned, he held back too much.
Why am I madder than a wet hen? Because I am tired of the same ridiculous canard about the left and political correctness that this stupid woman has brought out of mothballs. People did not vote for Donald Trump because they’re tired of political correctness; they voted for Donald Trump because they never tire of white supremacy, misogyny, and anti-Semitism. No one is more politically correct than the folks who complain about political correctness.
Don’t believe me? I’ll prove it.
The same people who are angry because someone criticizes them for racist jokes don’t want you to be able to say whatever you want.
- If, like Black Lives Matter, you say that police shouldn’t be shooting unarmed black men in the back, they try to shut you up by saying you’re anti-police.
- If you say that cages aren’t the best places for babies, they try to shut you up by saying you’re for open borders.
- If you say that women should decide for themselves whether they want to be mothers, they try to shut you up by calling you a baby killer.
- If you protest that killing Grandma during COVID-19 doesn’t sound so pro-life, they try to shut you up by saying you want to kill the economy.
- If you say that every citizen should have the right to vote, they try to shut you up by claiming you’re advocating voter fraud.
- If you champion the First Amendment, they try to shut you up by saying you’re anti-Christian.
- If you say that we should have a diverse society where everyone lives in harmony and gets an equal shot, they try to shut you up by calling you anti-white.
- If you criticize the Lost Cause monuments they use to whitewash the evils of slavery, they accuse you of trying to erase history.
While they were free to spew venom for the eight years of the Obama Administration, any criticism of the Trump Administration provokes an attempt to silence you by claiming you hate America. And don’t you dare criticize their Golden Idol himself because then they completely lose their minds. They call us snowflakes, but you can’t escape their current watery meltdowns. Their embroidered throw pillow reads: “Free speech for me, but not for thee.”
Because when it comes down to it, people who don’t believe in democracy believe the First Amendment only applies to them. And that should be no surprise.
