Donald Trump made this boast to an almost entirely maskless, shoulder-to-shoulder rally crowd in Tampa, Florida on Thursday:
If I can get better, anybody can get better.
Let that boast sink in.
Think of the hundreds of thousands who have died under this president’s watch – then read that boast again.
I wonder if Trump loyalist Herman Cain’s family knows what the president said. Cain doesn’t. The coronavirus killed him after he cheered Trump at a July rally in Tulsa, Okla.
“It’s rounding the turn. It’s rounding the turn,” Trump chanted his familiar lie about the deadliest pandemic in a century. The throng sweltering in an open field outside the Tampa Bay Buccaneer football stadium ate it up.
According to Johns Hopkins, Thursday set a record for the largest number of new coronavirus cases reported on a single day: 88,521. That was 9,540 more cases than Wednesday.
Close to 229,000 Americans — including more than 1,400 Kentuckians — have succumbed to COVID-19.
By now, there’s abundant evidence that Trump has never cared about anybody but himself. His “If I can get better, anybody can get better” boast is more proof that he lacks even a shred of sensitivity to, or empathy for, the suffering of his fellow citizens who are fighting for their lives against the virus or for families mourning the loss of loved ones it killed.
Donald Trump doesn’t give a damn.
Oh, he still claims he’s the champion of the blue-collar, “forgotten American.” It’s the cruelest of cons.
He’s done all a president can do to enrich already-rich guys like himself (with a big boost from millionaire Mitch McConnell.) “Drain the swamp”? Trump’s mob boss of one of the most corrupt presidential administrations in our history.
Trump may follow a procession of administration courtiers and jesters to jail when he’s out of office, hopefully Jan. 20.
When the pandemic hit, Trump deliberately refused to take decisive, necessary presidential action for fear of tanking the economy and the stock market. He elevated profit above the lives of his constituents.
The pandemic wrecked the economy and led to massive unemployment. Stocks sagged this morning, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average was expected to wrap up its worst week and worst month since March, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Meanwhile, Trump keeps ignoring dire warnings from experts about the necessity for masks and social distancing and keeps endangering his most ardent followers with super-spreader rallies. He’s supposed to be at three more today – in Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota.
Never mind that the medical science he belittles saved his life. Forget that the president received some of the best healthcare in the country. Free to him, it was taxpayer-funded — socialized medicine! — that’s unavailable to most Americans.
Trump is a serial liar, pathological or purposeful. But of the thousands upon thousands of falsehoods and deliberately misleading statements he’s spewed, “If I can get better, anybody can get better” is his most damnable lie yet.
