Attorney General Daniel Cameron filed another lawsuit today, asking a judge to block all of Governor Andy Beshear’s emergency orders – both those already issued and any he might issue in the future.
In the motion, Cameron’s office calls the governor’s orders “an arbitrary and unreasonable burden” on people’s rights. The motion also says that Beshear has issued the orders without consulting with the attorney general.
In his briefing today, Beshear was very blunt, saying that if Cameron’s request is granted, “people will die.”
Dems issue statement
The Democratic leaders in the state legislature issued the following statement following the news of Cameron’s lawsuit:
“At a time when it is more important than ever to put the brakes on the spread of COVID-19, Attorney General Daniel Cameron is doing all he can to speed things up by trying to negate every emergency order Governor Andy Beshear has issued since the pandemic arrived in March.
It is difficult to fathom why anyone, much less our chief law enforcement officer, would want to take such drastic action. The law, however, is clear: The General Assembly has granted broad emergency powers to the governor, and we reinforced that during the final days of this year’s legislative session.
Attorney General Cameron’s actions in court today are wrong legally, and they are most certainly wrong morally. There is a reason why no other state’s Attorney General is attempting something like this.”
