Just a short explainer note, in case you weren’t aware of the following:
- Trump is holding a campaign rally on June 19 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
- June 19th is “Juneteenth.” This is a day commemorating the end of slavery in America. Why this date? Because it was on this date in 1865 that word finally got to African-Americans in Texas of the Emancipation Proclamation, and that they were now free.
- Trump is holding his rally on Juneteenth.
- Tulsa is the site of the 1921 “Tulsa Race Massacre,” when mobs of white residents attacked black residents and businesses of the Greenwood District in Tulsa, Oklahoma. It has been called “the single worst incident of racial violence in American history.” The attack, carried out on the ground and from private aircraft dropping firebombs, destroyed more than 35 square blocks of the district—at that time the wealthiest black community in the United States, known as “Black Wall Street”.

- And finally, Trump’s press secretary said that the date and location were chosen because “the African-American community is very near and dear to his heart.”
Now you know.
