In an editorial entitled “‘Change Agent’ Charles Booker is best Democratic candidate in Kentucky Senate race,” the Louisville Courier-Journal today endorsed Rep. Charles Booker for the Democratic nomination to take on Senator Mitch McConnell.
The endorsement by the C-J comes one day after a similar endorsement by the Lexington Herald-Leader, as well as endorsements by Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

The editorial board of the Courier-Journal begins by calling out the times we are in:
This is a historic time in our state and nation. A time when young and old, black, white and brown are calling for change — not just incremental change, but sweeping reform that will usher in true equality and justice for all.
To get there, we need political leaders with insight and vision, who understand the challenges of our times and are willing to put forth bold ideas and fight for everyday people. Voters in Kentucky and around the country deserve the chance to consider candidates who have strident beliefs and the courage to go beyond scripted, milquetoast politics.
They then explain the process they followed in coming to their endorsement, including interviews, examination of positions, and debate performances.
They talk about the other two candidates, Amy McGrath and Mike Broihier. About McGrath, they conclude that “she has not shown the progressive ideas and bold leadership necessary to move our state forward. She has been overly moderate, measured and cautious throughout this campaign.”
As for Broihier, they say he “should continue to pursue public office. He supports the progressive ideas that Booker is pushing, including Medicare for All, universal basic income and the Green New Deal. He also has a good grasp of the issues Kentuckians face and the conviction to bring change, but he doesn’t possess the same experience and passion that Booker brings.”
They then take some time to lay out Booker’s background and experience, which is wide and varied. They talk about him showing up for the protests. They lay out his primary issues: “accessible health care for all, comprehensive infrastructure projects that can provide good jobs for Kentuckians and ending generational poverty by investing in people.”
They conclude:
Booker’s vision for Kentucky and the United States is bold, progressive, positive and passionate. We believe he’s the strongest in this field of Democrats in Kentucky’s June 23 primary and encourage voters to look closely at his record and vision for our commonwealth.
