If you’ve been reading the site for a while, you may have noticed that we get a good number of our straight news stories from the KY Press News Service. This was a consortium of newspapers put together by the Kentucky Press Association; you paid an annual fee, and they would pull stories from various members and make those stories available to all the members. We got stories from it, and some of our work showed up on other sites as well.
A few days ago, we got a notice that KPNS was being suspended, perhaps permanently. With that one email, we lost a news source we had counted on.
I reached out to the publishers of some of the sites we got stories from, asking if we could still pull excerpts from their sites with attribution and links back. So far, none of them have responded. (I also proposed putting together a press poll to cover Frankfort, instead of everyone sending their own person. No bite on that, either.)
One source that did reach out was Kentucky Today, the full-service online media outlet sponsored by the Kentucky Baptist Convention. They have agreed to let us carry some of their original reporting, as long as we link back and include bylines and attribution. (Which we were already doing with the KPNS stories.)
So, you will see start seeing some KY Today stories on the site. You may see some of our stories on their site as well. And, if other sites want to do some story-sharing, I’ll let you know. But for now, the only use we will be able to make of some of the sources we used to use will be through fair-use standards (one or two paragraphs and the link back).
