A voter in Nelson County has filed a lawsuit challenging the candidacy of David Reed, a long-time Republican who has attacked and derided Democrats for years, but switched his party registration on December 31 (the last day to do so), and then filed as a Democrat to run against incumbent Rep. Chad McCoy in the May Democratic primary.
According to a press release announcing the lawsuit, “Reed has not retracted his diatribes against the Democratic Party, nationally, statewide or locally. He still attends Republican functions and does not show support for Democratic policies or candidates.”
Anna Whites, attorney for the Plaintiff, stated that “The Democratic Oath asks voters and candidates to swear to support the guiding principles of the Party. Democratic candidates are the face of the party. Reed’s hostility and aggression towards Democrats and Democratic candidates, including his public vow never to vote Democratic as long as he lives, show that his candidacy is a farce and that he is taking improper advantage of the political process for personal gain. We expect the court to promptly disqualify him.”
