Several people from Paducah and nearby communities braved subfreezing temperatures and a few snowflakes to join the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day commemoration Monday in Paducah. The observance began with a march to the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial on Park Avenue from the nearby Cherry Civic Center, where a luncheon was held after the procession. Rep. Jewell Jones of Detroit was the featured speaker.

On Monday night, a large crowd gathered at Mayfield’s Fairview Baptist Church for the city’s MLK Day program. Chris Biggers, a retired administrator of the Kentucky Department of Juvenile Justice, was the featured speaker, and the program included readings and music from local youth.
