Rep. Charles Booker (D-Louisville), who just announced his exploratory committee for U.S. Senate in 2020, today called for the impeachment and removal from office of President Trump.
Booker’s statement followed testimony this morning by Ambassador to the European Union Gordan Sondland, who stated that there was definitely a quid pro quo tying the Ukrainian military aid and other U.S. support to investigations of the Bidens and the forwarding of the “Ukraine did it, not Russia” conspiracy theory regarding the 2016 election.
Here is Rep. Booker’s statement:
This is a sad moment for our nation. It has now been confirmed repeatedly, under oath and before our very eyes, that the person who sits in the highest office has broken the law. This is a moment in which Congress has no choice but to impeach and remove Donald Trump from the office.
Yet Mitch McConnell has made it clear that he will protect the President, no matter how many crimes he has committed. Why? Because Mitch is the most unpopular Senator in the country, and he needs Trump’s support to win re-election.
McConnell doesn’t care about Kentucky or our democracy, he has made it clear he only cares about his power.
It’s time Kentucky had a Senator who will put the country’s interests ahead of their own political career. This is not about party, and it’s not about wanting to get rid of Donald Trump. It’s about taking care of our home, our Commonwealth and our children.
I promise to always put Kentucky first.
