The Donald Trump-themed banner at Anderson County football’s homecoming game, which continues to be a hot topic around Lawrenceburg, was one of the highlights at Monday night’s school board meeting.
The meeting began with public comments, in which Teri Carter took the opportunity to share her disapproval with the board’s response to people’s concerns related to the banner.
“The citizens who elected you guys to the board are afraid of you,” Carter said in her speech. “They are afraid of their own school board, and I want you to ask yourself why that is?”
Carter spoke for five minutes uninterrupted and read off a pre-written script. In her speech, she said that people have reached out to her and to members of the board about feeling attacked by the public’s response to the banner, and claimed that the board has done nothing to comfort their side.
Carter never said negative things about the banner during her speech, she was just expressing her discontent to the board’s supposed lack of attention to the side that disagrees with the banner.
Carter said that a former Anderson County High School student anonymously emailed her following last month’s school board meeting about how minorities are treated at school.
Carter shared with the board that she shouldn’t be delivering these types of messages to the board and that people should feel comfortable reaching out to the board directly with issues.
Carter also pointed out that three people spoke at last month’s school board meeting about the topic and the board didn’t do anything to acknowledge those speakers.
“None of this was ever about a banner or even who wears a ‘Make America Great Again’ hat, the point is I should not have to be here,” Carter said. “It’s about the fact that you have a citizenry, that includes former students, who are afraid to bring their concerns to you.”
Carter ended her speech by asking the board what will they do to fix the issue. Only one board member – Rose Morgan – applauded at the end of Carter’s speech.
