Daniel Cameron, the Repub candidate for attorney general, is up with his latest ad, and it follows the Mitch McConnell playbook. Vicious, intimidating, full of half-truths and outright lies, it talks about Greg Stumbo giving “illegals” driver’s licenses, and Democrats wanting to fill Kentucky with “Mexican meth.” It’s ugly, it’s demeaning, and you need a shower after watching it. Greg Stumbo, the Dem candidate released the following press release in response to the Cameron mud-slinging:
DANIEL CAMERON STEPS UP HIS CAMPAIGN OF RACIST ATTACKS AND LIES IN CLOSING DAYS OF CAMPAIGN
LEXINGTON, KY, October 22, 2019 – Taking a page from the White Nationalist’s play book, Daniel Cameron takes aim at Kentucky immigrants in his latest false negative attack ad, trying to scare Kentucky voters into believing they are “pouring over our border into Kentucky” and bringing their “Mexican Meth” with them.
“It is truly shameful that the first African American candidate for statewide office in Kentucky would resort to such blatant racist attacks against our immigrant communities in order to score a few cheap political points. It’s one thing for Daniel Cameron to call Greg Stumbo an “old white man,” but pitting Kentuckians against other innocent Kentuckians who have immigrated here legally should be a bridge too far for any voter who believes in social and racial justice,” said Meredith Scalos, campaign spokesperson for Greg Stumbo, Democratic candidate for Attorney General.
Not only is Cameron’s latest ad a racist attack on legal immigrants, it is filled with demonstrably false lies. As Daniel Cameron has done throughout this race, he has no experience and no record, and must resort to nasty lies and personal attacks.
CAMERON LIE #1: “Criminals and drugs pouring over the border into Kentucky. National Democrats scream, ‘Let them in!’ Stumbo agrees.”
FACT #1: Stumbo does not and has never agreed with any Democrat, Republican, or Independent at the state or federal level who has ‘screamed’ “Let them in” or otherwise suggested weakening penalties for crossing America’s borders illegally. Stumbo opposes decriminalizing illegal border crossings. Stumbo supports laws prohibiting anyone from entering into the United States illegally. Moreover, Stumbo has NEVER said he supports allowing illegal immigrants into America, much less Kentucky, and we challenge Daniel Cameron to provide a quote or play a recording to the media of Greg saying anything to the contrary.
CAMERON LIE #2: “Greg Stumbo sponsored legislation giving illegals Kentucky driver’s licenses.”
FACT #2: Greg Stumbo NEVER sponsored any legislation “giving” illegal immigrants driver’s licenses. Stumbo did support legislation requiring immigrants to provide proof of their origin, their address in the US, their address at home, and other information that would make it easier for law enforcement to track criminal activity. In short, it was another tool for law enforcement to fight crime. This begs the question — does Daniel Cameron want to prevent law enforcement from tracking criminal activity in Kentucky? As much as he would like, Cameron can’t have it both ways. Either he supports efforts to help law enforcement track criminal activity by immigrants in our country illegally, or he does not. Which is it?
CAMERON LIE #3: “We can’t let Stumbo turn Kentucky into a sanctuary state.”
FACT #3: Kentucky is not a sanctuary state and Greg Stumbo has never proposed turning Kentucky into one – just the opposite.
