One of the treasures of Kentucky, Bernheim Forest, is facing a double-barreled threat:
- An LG&E gas pipeline cutting through the forest, threatening land specifically deeded to the forest with a conservation easement prohibiting use for pipelines. LG&E says they will use eminent domain to override the conservation easement.
- An interstate highway connecting I-71 and I-65 using part of Bernheim Forest for its right-of-way, splitting the forest in two.
Bernheim leadership and concerned citizens have begun the “Bernheim Under Threat” movement, to call attention to these threats and get persons across Kentucky to stand up for the Forest against these two destructive plans.
As part of that effort, a “Save Bernheim” rally was held Friday in Louisville. The rally began in Jefferson Square Park in downtown, with various speakers and music. The entire rally then marched down Main Street to LG&E headquarters, demonstrating in front of the building for some time.
